Kara Goucher, Carl Lewis, and Jenny Fletcher To Participate In Live Earth Run For Water

The No. 1 ranked American marathon runner in 2009, a nine-time Olympic gold medalist and a professional athlete and fashion model are among the latest supporters teaming up with Live Earth in support of the Dow Live Earth Run for Water – the largest global water initiative in history aimed at helping solve the world water crisis.

Elite athletes Kara GoucherCarl Lewis, and Jenny Fletcher have announced their participation in the April 18, 2010 events, which will feature a series of 6 km run/walks (the average distance many women and children walk every day to get water), concerts and water education activities taking place in countries around the world.

“I am honored to be taking part in the Dow Live Earth Run for Water event,” said Kara Goucher, the No. 1 ranked American marathon runner in 2009. “As a woman, I find it distressing that millions of women and children around the world walk six kilometers each and every day to fetch safe, clean drinking water for their families. As a runner, I’m privileged to be able to share my talent and passion to raise awareness for such an important issue.”

Water scarcity is an issue affecting countries, communities and families all over the world. One in eight people don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water. Eighty-eight percent of diarrheal cases worldwide are linked to inadequate and unsafe water. These cases result in 1.5 million deaths each year, mostly among children under five. In these areas, women and children are forced to walk 6 km (3.7 miles) each day to secure water that is likely unsuitable for drinking.

“Committing to participate in the Dow Live Earth Run for Water is something everyone, everywhere can do,” said Carl Lewis, a nine-time Olympic gold medalist. “With every step, the Dow Live Earth Run for Water will empower the global community to get fit, while taking action to help solve this important environmental issue.”

Celebs Conquer Kilimanjaro Summit to Support Clean Water

Jessica Biel, Lupe Fiasco, Isabel Lucas, Emile Hirsch, Santigold, Elizabeth Gore and Alexandra Cousteau were among the climbers joining Grammy-nominated musician and philanthropist Kenna for a Summit on the Summit at the top of Africa’s largest free standing mountain early this morning.

After six intense days of hiking and climbing, the group set out for their final trek at 1:30am local time and after nearly seven hours reached Mt. Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru peak which generally has only a 75% success rate. Watch a video from day 5 of the climb below.

Each participant battled a plethora of physical and natural elements over the past week to make the ascent. Between coping with weather ranging from rain, hail, snow and the effects of altitude, including headaches, dizziness and fatigue among other ailments all made the over 50 mile journey that much more arduous. Immediately after summiting, the group descended for an additional six plus hours of hiking to 12,000 feet, where they will make their final night of camp.

SUMMIT ON THE SUMMIT: Kilimanjaro was a call to action to raise awareness of the global clean water crisis and funds to benefit The Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Water For People’s Playpump Technology. The expedition and the dramatic final ascent were also recorded for a special documentary that will air on MTV on March 14th at 9pm/8pm CST.

How You Can Help Haiti Earthquake Victims

haiti

Thousands may be dead after the horrendous earthquake that rocked Haiti yesterday — possibly more than 100,000 — according to some early estimates. Many others are left homeless or without adequate food, water and shelter on the island nation of 9 million after a magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck near the capital city Port-au-Prince.

Disaster relief organizations are rapidly mobilizing aid to Haiti and are asking or help. Funds are needed to provide enough safe water, temporary shelter and vital medical supplies.

UNICEF and Save the Children already have emergency teams in Haiti, and the Red Cross has released $200,000 in disaster funds.

Announcing The Dow Live Earth Run For Water

Live Earth is pleased to announce the largest global water initiative in history to help solve the world water crisis with Global Water Challenge and Dow.

Taking place on April 18, 2010, the Dow Live Earth Run for Water will feature concerts and water education activities aimed at igniting a massive global movement to help solve the water crisis.

“The Dow Live Earth Run for Water will bring people together around the world, raising awareness about the sources and consequences of the water crisis, locally and globally,” said Alexandra Cousteau, global water advocate and founder of Blue Legacy International. “It captures perfectly the interconnectedness of life on our water planet and drives home the message that the water crisis is a global issue that isn’t going to be fixed by scientists or policymakers alone. It’s up to each of us.”

Everybody counts in helping to solve the water crisis. The Dow Live Earth Run for Water is a global movement focused on the actions individuals can take to effectively address the issue. People are encouraged to START solving the problem today, RUN in a Dow Live Earth Run for Water run/walk in their community or organize their own run/walk through the Friends of Live Earth program, SAVE water in their home and local community through conservation efforts, GIVE money to support clean, safe water projects and SPEAK UP by signing the Live Earth petition to add water as a basic human right to the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights.

“Water scarcity is an issue that affects all of us and we all have a responsibility to do our part to help solve this global crisis,” said actor and Dow Live Earth Run for Water supporter Jessica Biel. “The beauty of the Dow Live Earth Run for Water is that it gives us a platform to encourage others to be part of the solution to help everyone have access to clean, safe drinking water.”

Sobre a Dow Live Earth Run for Water
